Droneuary XVII - Tolerating Destruction

about

Tolerating Destruction is an example of CTb's merging of electroacoustic improvisation, acousmatic music, and studio composition techniques. This piece was developed from a studio improvisation at the Squidco Studio in Wilmington, NC. The original improvisation used a Korg MS2000, two iPads running Sunvox, a MacBook running Farrago, a VSS-30 sampling keyboard, and a deer call. Two spoken word sections are, both from studio manipulated samples triggered by Farrago. The first is a set of words drawn from nouns selected from Charles Kay Ogden's 850 word Basic English set; the second quote establishes the theme of the piece. The improvisation was manipulated in Cubase to add additional accents and short layers, to correct some level issues, and to add studio trickery to the final composition; the original timeline of the improvisation remains untouched.

Tolerance has been largely ignored in our culture this decade (and beyond, sadly), and the destruction and danger of extreme attitudes and the loss of empathy in segments of our culture leaves us with the emptiness heard in the second section of the piece. The activity of the first section is contrasted with the desolation and emptiness of the second set, a reflection of egocentric outcome.
