Tomasz Pizio - Building and Tearing Down

from April Fields by Various Artists

/

about

The track is a compilation of 10 different field recordings, ranging from a tarmac bikelane being built in a seaside forest, insulating a block of flats up to a coal mine shaft being torn down. Both of the processes - building something and later tearing it down - are very noisy and disruptive to the usual soundscape of the place. It is even more so nowadays when the use of heavy machinery is common. However, wildlife is often found in the immediate vicinity of the build sites and even with so many layers of construction sounds presented here, some of the natural sounds can clearly be distinguished.
What is normally perceived as annoying noise and a unaviodable byproduct of construction or deconstruction, is here compiled into intriguing and rich composition with specific sounds flowing up from the seming cacophony.
The accompanying graphics is a series of watercolour paintings by Justyna Pizio, inspired and created exclusively for this track and composed into a single piece in the same spirit of layering.
